{"id":592,"date":"2020-08-06T18:52:40","date_gmt":"2020-08-06T18:52:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/test\/2020\/08\/06\/a-male-therapist\/"},"modified":"2025-01-20T14:43:37","modified_gmt":"2025-01-20T19:43:37","slug":"a-male-therapist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.campbellteenfamilytherapy.com\/blog\/a-male-therapist\/","title":{"rendered":"A Male Therapist."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"paragraph\">\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 When my daughter first started Kindergarten, we waited anxiously to find out who her teacher would be.\u00a0\u00a0Our school kept us in anticipation as they didn\u2019t post the classroom assignments until the night before class started.\u00a0\u00a0Considering a busy life and the excitement and importance of a good night of sleep, our family made the decision to just wait until the morning of school.\u00a0\u00a0Afterall, we love the school and went through a lot of trouble to get into it.\u00a0\u00a0How bad could a teacher they choose be?<\/p>\n<p>Morning arrived, and like all first time Kindergarten moms, I was just as nervous as my daughter was.\u00a0\u00a0We looked at the classroom assignment together and saw the last name, Wassather.\u00a0\u00a0Ok, maybe a bit hard to pronounce, but could be shortened to Mrs. W.\u00a0\u00a0We walked to class expecting a loving, kind, smart, friendly and qualified Female teacher.\u00a0\u00a0To our surprise we were greeted at the door by a Male Teacher!<\/p>\n<p>I will admit, I was shocked, Men don\u2019t teach Kindergarten?\u00a0\u00a0Where was the soft cuddly female I expected?\u00a0\u00a0Mr. W. could see the look of dismay on my face and all I could say was, \u201cwe were expecting a female\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Mr. W. simply replied, \u201cwell I am a male\u201d.\u00a0Internally a chorus of thoughts were running through my head, my daughter will never feel comfortable.\u00a0\u00a0She will never trust a man.\u00a0\u00a0She is scared of men!\u00a0\u00a0This will never work!<\/p>\n<p>At this point, I should call myself out, yes that is judgmental.\u00a0\u00a0Yes, it was sexist, and yes, it was a stereotype, but hey I grew up in a world where men didn\u2019t teach Kindergarten!\u00a0\u00a0I had to really take a close look at what my own biases and judgements were.\u00a0\u00a0I had to remind myself that I trust this school and that they trust him.\u00a0\u00a0While glad that our school allows the parents to stay for a while the first day, I was skeptical but put on a strong face.\u00a0\u00a0This will be ok, I thought.\u00a0\u00a0It has to be.<\/p>\n<p>And it was!\u00a0\u00a0My daughter had an amazing 2 years, (our school has a K\/1 combo class).\u00a0\u00a0Our school is also a parent participation school so I got the opportunity to work with Mr. W, see him in action and to really change my biases.\u00a0\u00a0He was one of the most caring Kindergarten teachers I ever met.\u00a0\u00a0He had excellent classroom management skills, the kids learned a lot and he handled things well in each situation he was presented with.\u00a0\u00a0The parents and I would giggle later when we reflected that in Kindergarten Round Up, the school decided to take all of the crying children and put them in the classroom with the kindest teacher who could meet their needs and help them with the transition in a kind, consistent and firm matter.<\/p>\n<p>I am grateful that I didn\u2019t listen to my judgements and my biases and took a chance on a male Kindergarten teacher.
