{"id":594,"date":"2018-01-30T18:45:15","date_gmt":"2018-01-30T18:45:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/test\/2018\/01\/30\/affirmative-consent-safe-sex\/"},"modified":"2025-01-20T14:43:38","modified_gmt":"2025-01-20T19:43:38","slug":"affirmative-consent-safe-sex","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.campbellteenfamilytherapy.com\/blog\/affirmative-consent-safe-sex\/","title":{"rendered":"Affirmative Consent &#038; Safe Sex"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"paragraph\">\u200b<strong>Safe Sex: Not Just About STDs and Pregnancy Anymore.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>By:\u00a0 Ingrid Higgins, LMFT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Teens have been taught about safe sex practices for decades.\u00a0 Most teens are knowledgeable enough to know that you need to use protection to avoid an unwanted pregnancy or STD.\u00a0 However, in today\u2019s day and age, that information is not enough to truly practice \u201csafe sex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The issue of consent to engage in sexual activity as a college student is a topic that is now being addressed in a different way. Society has been forced to redefine \u201cdate rape\u201d, and there is now the category of \u201cnonconsensual sex\u201d which is a way to define a \u201crape\u201d that was not forced because the victim was incapacitated by drugs or alcohol.\u201d (Oliver, Kelly, Americana (1553-8931), 15538931, Fall2015, Vol. 14, Issue 2).<\/p>\n<p>College students are encouraged to not just get consent, but to get \u201cAffirmative Consent\u201d.\u00a0 \u00a0Affirmative\u00a0consent is defined as: the voluntary, mutual, and knowing decision among all parties to engage in sexual activity (Halley, 2016).<\/p>\n<p>College students have to ask the questions, if you are incapacitated, can you honestly consent?\u00a0 Does remaining silent and not saying no mean that you are saying yes?\u00a0 Does shrugging your shoulders and saying \u201cok, I guess\u201d mean yes?\u00a0 Is desire equal to consent?<\/p>\n<p>Affirmative Consent is not a policy only for college Students.\u00a0 High school students can just as easily find themselves in a situation that could be considered \u201cdate rape\u201d or \u201cnonconsensual sex\u201d.\u00a0 Rather then the traditional \u201cno means no\u201d, teens and young adults are asked to adhere to the concept that \u201cyes means yes\u201d instead.
