{"id":600,"date":"2014-11-22T00:23:46","date_gmt":"2014-11-22T00:23:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/test\/2014\/11\/22\/emdr-for-ptsd\/"},"modified":"2025-01-20T14:43:55","modified_gmt":"2025-01-20T19:43:55","slug":"emdr-for-ptsd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.campbellteenfamilytherapy.com\/blog\/emdr-for-ptsd\/","title":{"rendered":"EMDR for PTSD"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"\"><font size=\"4\">A Demon Named PTSD<\/font><br \/>By Ingrid Higgins, MFT<\/p>\n<p>I have a demon; her name is PTSD. &nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>She is very strong and has the power to make me remember&nbsp;<br \/>all of the things people have done to hurt me in the past. &nbsp;<br \/>PTSD can create, in an instant, the same feelings of those past hurts&nbsp;<br \/>and the same physical sensations. &nbsp;<br \/>When she comes, it is very hard to be close to others.&nbsp;<br \/>PTSD reminds me of how bad people have been in the past&nbsp;<br \/>and why I should not trust anyone.&nbsp;<br \/>She keeps me safe, so that&nbsp;no one can hurt me again. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><font size=\"3\"><span style=\"\">Symptoms of PTSD in adolescents may include:<\/span><span style=\"\"> <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<ul style=\"\">\n<li style=\"\"><span style=\"\">Over reacting to something that seems small to others<\/span><br \/><span style=\"\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"\"><span style=\"\">Fighting with people, not knowing why they are upset<\/span><br \/><span style=\"\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"\"><span style=\"\">Avoiding people or places<\/span><br \/><span style=\"\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"\"><span style=\"\">Flashbacks, zoning out or checking out<\/span><br \/><span style=\"\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"\"><span style=\"\">Poor concentration, gaps in memory<\/span><br \/><span style=\"\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"\"><span style=\"\">Nightmares, and other troubles sleeping<\/span><br \/><span style=\"\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"\"><span style=\"\">Angry outbursts, a generally irritable mood<\/span><br \/><span style=\"\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"\"><span style=\"\">Anxiety, excessive guilt or shame<\/span><br \/><span style=\"\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"\"><span style=\"\"> Inability to experience positive emotions <\/span><br \/><span style=\"\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"\"><span style=\"\">Self-destructive behavior, negative beliefs about oneself <\/span><br \/><span style=\"\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"\"><span style=\"\">Not trusting others or being suspicious, startling easily<\/span><br \/><span style=\"\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"\"><span style=\"\">Behavior problems at school, grades dropping&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>PTSD can go unrecognized in adolescents because of the belief that it is caused by a huge traumatic event such as fighting in a war, or being in a tornado, or being held at gunpoint. &nbsp;In adolescents, the traumatic event might not be as easy to recognize. &nbsp;Bullying that might not seem that bad to others often traumatizes adolescents. &nbsp;Undisclosed abuse can also lead to PTSD. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Treatment options are available<\/strong>. &nbsp;EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is very effective with children, teens and adults. &nbsp;Research has proved its efficacy. &nbsp;As a certified EMDR therapist, I have seen the results in my practice and believe that doing this work in adolescence can prevent suffering later in life. There is a cure for PTSD.
